A Day In: Aachen
We took a road-trip to Aachen - an insanely charming cobblestone city nestled near the Belgium/Netherlands borders. Known for its rainy temperament, we spent our day splashing about the city exploring and learning about Charlemagne.
This city is easily explored in a day. Below I’ve included our city guide to provide a road-map, which includes addresses for each point of interest.
See/Do:
Aachen Cathedral - The Barbarossa chandelier was it for me. Breathtaking.
Domschatzkammer Aachen (Cathedral Treasury) - I owe credit to the personal headset tour to our recent museum successes, as they keep both boys active and entertained these days. Praise him. Of note: the gold cased shaped hand containing Charlemagne’s radius and ulna were a highlight.
Elisengarten/Elisenbrunnen - 53 Celsius thermal water fountains surrounded by a neoclassical pavillion and small park.
Marktplatz - idyllic. Must return for the Christmas Market.
Fischmarkt & Gras Haus - home to the town's former fish market and first town hall, this unassuming square oozes with charm.
Eat:
Monsieur Daniel - we went, twice.
Cafe Elysee - nestled across from Elisengarten and positively delicious. There isn’t a Children’s menu but they prepared a simply linguine/tomato sauce the boys enjoyed. Mark loved his Osobucco and I tucked right into my Hummersuppe. Our only regret was not having a glass of wine from their thoughtfully curated list.
Nodis - when in Aachen one must stop by for Printen, a local treat. A member of the gingerbread family, these soft cookies were the perfect balance of warm spices and sweetness.
Park: Parkhaus Am Dom
Exceedingly well kept and equipped with an elevator large enough to house our Uppababy.
